What a fantastic analogy…
“When the needle touched down….. “
When the needle touched down, what was playing?
Was it music you were into?
What played next?
How do you decide…?
When do you pick the needle back up… knowing you are at risk of scratching the record if you don’t let the whole thing play out? But if you let the whole thing play out, what are you left with?
When do you pick up?
How do you pick up?
Very, very… --- … carefully.
- Immediately! I don’t like this song. I don’t care if I scratch the record forever.
- Not just now. I could get into this. I wonder where this is going.
- I’ve heard this song before. I wonder if the rest of the record is as good as this song.
- This is my favorite song. I love this part. But I know there’s a song coming that I’m not terribly fond of.
- This is a beautiful record. I wonder is there is more music out there like this?
- I love this. This is going to be my favorite album for a WHILE.
- If I could play one record for the rest of my life, this would be it.
Somewhere between the first and last statements is where most relationships lie.
“And if I knew then what’s so obvious now, you’d still be here…” ,says Niko Case, in her song “The Needle Has Landed”. I guess someone else didn’t like where it landed.
But there is a song by Willie and Lobo called “Rockin’ Gypsies”.
When the violin cries in that song… so do I.
If the needle ever landed in that song… I would be home forever.
